Olive Garden Desserts History

General Mills, Inc. opened the first Olive Garden on December 13, 1982, in Orlando, Florida. By 1989, the company had grown fast, with 145 locations. The brand grew in popularity and eventually became the largest full-service Italian-themed restaurant franchise in the United States. Sales were quite high, and the establishment was regarded as a quickly rising brand within General Mills, Inc. Darden Restaurants separated from General Mills, Inc. as its restaurant holdings company in 1995. As a result, the chain became a subsidiary of Darden.
