It was not on the plan to hit a bakery, but there it was, calling our name. We went into Princeton, NJ for a whole different reason, but there it was with its smells and colors sucking me in.

The House of Cupcakes is not your ordinary cupcake shop.

They have the unique distinction being winners on Cupcake Wars. It was back in 2011, but what a way to prove that you are the best of the best. Not only did they win, but they donated the $10,000 prize money to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

I love that.

I enter the store and immediately drawn to the beautiful wall of cupcakes on my right.

The colors man, the colors.

The options seemed endless compared to some other cupcake shops we have been to. From dulche de leche to Snickers bar – there is definitely a cupcake flavor for everyone.

I proceeded to ask for 4 cupcakes, to which the employee helping us responded “if you buy 5 you get one free”.

So, we left with six cupcakes. Not four.

I mean really, how can you pass up that deal?

We left with the following flavors:

  • Chocolate Raspberry
  • Red Velvet
  • Chocolate Cherry
  • Lemon Raspberry

I could not wait to dive in, but like a good girl we went to dinner first.

When we got back home, the first one I dug into was the cherry chocolate cupcake.

It had light, yet extremely chocolatey flavor for the base. The filling was a fresh cherry compote of some sort and the topping was a light – and not too sweet cream. Of course, the cherry on the top just made it perfect.

Look at that beautiful cherry filling just oozing out when I cut it in half.

Some cupcakes I have had in the past had very little filling and you can tell it was canned filling that was way too sweet. These cupcakes were not that at all.

Fresh pieces of cherry with a good level of sweetness that did not overwhelm the flavor of the cake and frosting.

My final thoughts on this cherry chocolate cupcake?

I absolutely loved it and cannot wait to go back for more. It definitely is at that top of my list of favorite cupcakes ever.

The other flavors we sampled.

  • Red Velvet – which my husband tried. Now, I will say this guy is not a cupcake guy. But he absolutely loved the red velvet. He said it was light and not too sweet.
  • Chocolate Raspberry – this one was the deepest chocolate cake I ever tasted. It was delicious. Filled with raspberry filling and topped with a dark chocolate topping and purple flower. My only problem with this one is that the icing on the top was a lot – not too sweet – but just heavy and dark. I only ate about half of it. But, I would still buy this again in a heartbeat – the flavors were amazing.
  • Lemon Raspberry – the lemon raspberry cupcake was my favorite. The cake was moist and delicious vanilla with a lemon curd custard filling. The icing was a buttercream with a crunchy raspberry coating. The lemon lover was completely n love with this one.

While cupcakes are their thing, they did have this amazing display of sugar cookies as I entered the store.
